Hitched: Carrie & Adam at Semiahmoo

I have to say that this might be one of my favorite weddings of the entire year! Carrie and Adam had their destination wedding on a beautiful Northwest afternoon on July 28th at Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, Washington.

As camera assistants for Law & Order SVU, they know their film, so I’m proud to say that we shot some beautiful Kodak and Fuji film for this entire wedding (that’s right, old school!), even whipping out my trusty toy Holga. They work with film on a daily basis and even have a darkroom, so handling film is first nature for them and their friends (who by the way, are all HUGE film nerds like we are and all work in the industry and are photographers, even on sets like Sex And The City too! Not one person asked us why we weren’t shooting digital, it was great!)

Personal touches were everywhere- her flowers were designed by one of her fabulous bridesmaids, her invitations by another fabulous bridesmaid, her officient was a family friend, and her guest book was a combination of a signing print and a scrapbook, where guests could create their own scrapbooking page.

At the end of the night, I didn’t want to go home- it was a great, emotional, touching, and fun day. Now that everyone is back on their respective sides of the country (they all flew in from New York!), I’m sad that the wedding is over!!

My (little) Summer Vacation

My career is the most happening in the summer, on weekends, and on evenings. Most concerts, vacations, camping trips, parties, and festivals are also in the summer, on weekends, and on evenings. So this doesn’t really leave me all that much time for my own social life, UNLESS, we plan waaaay ahead and snatch up any spare weekend I’ve got for ourselves. Last year, we never got to go camping (because it took me a while to catch on to this “planning ahead” concept!), but this year we blocked out an entire weekend two or three months in advance for the First Annual Ocean Shores Campout. Jonny, Amber, Aileen, Ginger and I all headed out to Ocean City State Park for campfires, sand, sun, and smores.

What a weekend! The second day we were there, my trusty Subaru had it’s own interpretation of Old Faithful spewing out from under the hood, coolant shooting everywhere! So… while leaving my lovely little red at the town mechanic, we decided to explore, and ended up buying stunt kites and flying them in the warm sunshine!! The little town shop where we bought our kites is owned by none other than the chamion of stunt kite flying! There will be a few competitions between now and October- we may just drive back there for round two! Now, don’t think I’m a huge nerd here, but it’s so much fun! You can divebomb each other (and their kites) and do fun stunts-we can’t wait to fly them here in Seattle once it gets windier.

The third day we got caught in buckets of rain while beachcoming, and ended up sandy, cold, and absolutely drenched! We saw tons of creatures (jellyfish, sea ray, fish, a dog, and a pack of horses) and even found out what was making those little holes in the sand- shrimp!!! (shrimp on the barbie anyone??)

Now that we’re all back in town, safe and sound, cars running smoothly, and sand washed out of our hair, we can’t wait to go back next year!

What’s New Lately

So…. as you can probably guess (and see by the sheer number of posts already this month) it’s been an insanely awesome month. So many super fun weddings and shoots lately (I have four more to write about just from the last week and a half!!!) plus summer is a great time to launch new ideas.

July has had some gorgeous weddings and a beautiful baby boy, August has had some unique weddings and beautiful baby girl, and September will hold a record number of weddings, plus I’ll be out of town for a whirlwind trip to California for a Pictage conference (let me know if you’re a photographer and you’re going, we HAVE to meet up while we’re down there- it’s going to be a blast!)

I’ve also been working on a new website… as much as I love the unique design of old one, it’s a little hard to update and I dread the task. Stay tuned in the next month or so- the new Laurel McConnell Photography site is due to launch no later than October 1st (if not waaaay sooner) with a new look, tons of new images, and fun new blurbs to read!!

And hopefully, at some point in the near future, we’ll be putting out a quarterly newsletter just for the heck of it to our current and past clients detailing holiday cutoff information, new products, specials, reminders, and general fun tidbits.

Phew! It’s now past my bedtime :)

Engaged: Susan & Gavin

Discovery Park up on Magnolia’s beautiful bluff is where Susan and Gavin have spent a lot of time throughout their relationship. Mostly jogging the serene trails, training for marathons, but on a sunny day earlier in the month we went to Discovery to shoot some great pictures of the two of them. I just love their chemistry- they just shine when they’re together!!! I can’t wait until we arrive at the Lodge for their wedding!
